Question:

How do I care for my healing tattoo?

Answer:

When you finish receiving your tattoo, we will have put a bandage over it. The bandage should be removed after one hour and less than four hours. The idea is to remove the bandage and clean it with fragrant-free soap and water using your hand. Please don't just remove the bandage and let it go at that. You need to clean off the ointment and blood that may have leaked out immediately. When you dry it off, blot dry with a clean towel and allow it to air dry the rest of the way.

For the first few days, 3-4, your new tattoo will ooze a little bit of plasma discharge. It will leak out and try and harden into a scab. Your body is recognizing an open wound and trying to close it off with white blood cells and lymph. During these first few days, you will want to apply a VERY MODERATE AMOUNT of either A&D ointment or Aquaphor. A&D ointment is used for diaper rash and will be found in that section of the store while Aquaphor will be found near the lotions. DO NOT USE NEOSPORIN OR ANY ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT ON YOUR NEW TATTOO. IT WILL PULL YOUR COLOR OUT. That is of course unless your tattoo is leaking yellow/green puss and shows signs of infection that would likely be due to you not taking care of it the way we recommend.

Always wash your tattoo gently, blot dry, and air out prior to adding more ointment. You only need a little bit a few times a day. You are trying to keep it from drying out not keeping it moist. DO NOT OVERDO IT!!!

After a few days, you should notice the tattoo starting to flake when you put on the ointment. At this point you will want to switch over to a fragrant-free lotion for the remainder of the healing process.

  • DO NOT SUBMERGE A HEALING TATTOO UNTIL EVERYTHING HAS FLAKED OFF. GENERALLY A COUPLE WEEKS.
  • DO NOT DO STRENUOUS EXERCISE AND SWEAT A LOT WHILE A TATTOO IS HEALING.
  • DO NOT GET A HEALING TATTOO INTO DIRECT SUNLIGHT OR TANNING BEDS FOR THE FIRST MONTH...EVEN FIVE MINUTES IS TOO MUCH.
  • DO NOT PICK AT THE FLAKY SKIN OR SCABS THAT FORM, IT WILL PULL YOUR COLOR OUT.
  • DO NOT WEAR TIGHT CONSTRICTIVE OR BRAND NEW CLOTHING ON A TATTOO THAT IS HEALING.

We cannot touch up tattoos less than 6 weeks old so if your tattoo loses color during this initial healing, you have to wait for it to be done healing for us to do anything to it.
